Think about all of the times in your life you have seen a student or a kid step over a piece of trash and not pick it up. In those moments, as a teacher or adult in their life, we tend to say, “hey, can you please pick that up?”
Inevitably the response from the kid is, “It’s not mine” or “not mine,” or “ugh, it’s not even mine.”
Today’s mindset message focuses on the antidote for “It’s not my problem, someone else will deal with it.”
As mentioned in the previous Wellness Wednesdays, at Top 20 Training we are intentional about living our four cornerstones (Help Others Succeed, Honor the Absent, and Communicate “You Matter”) and today focuses on the final corner: See the problem, Own the Problem.

Whether it’s your workplace, classroom, stage, practice fields, home, or community, there are countless problems! It’s honestly overwhelming. When we have more of a self-centered mindset, all of the problems in those spaces continue and don’t catch the momentum towards solution. When we look outside of ourselves, we give ourselves an opportunity to be the beginning of change. The beginning of a solution.
So why don’t we see and own problems?
- Caught up and hyper-focused on our own to-do lists?
- Lack of time?
- A lack of the first step to a solution?
- Overwhelmed?
- Self doubt?
- Perceived disconnect with the problem?
- Pride?
Take a look at the picture below.

Imagine walking out of your duplex and seeing your neighbor’s freshly-shoveled stairs! It’s a defeating sight!
Keep that visual in mind as motivation to NEVER be the problem ignorer; be the problem owner and solver. Like all impact makers do, they start small. One shovel at a time. If that’s the mindset of yourself,…and then your team,…and then your greater community, problem owning becomes normative.
The small challenge for you today is to simply bring your shovel wherever you go. Be ready to dig in.
All the best to you and yours,
