I have a concern. It appears that many things during this time in our history as a country are not going very well. Dissatisfaction and divisiveness seem to be the order of the day. I suspect that many things have caused this to happen. I’m going to posit a lack of effective leadership as a major cause of our not being what we are capable of being.

For quite some time I have been collecting articles and ideas regarding leadership. Over the next several weeks, I will share much of what I have gathered in Wellness Wednesdays.

As I think about the people to whom we are sending Wellness Wednesday, I suspect in one way or another they are all leaders. Some are leading families; some are leading schools or classrooms; others are leading teams or organizations. At the very least, we are leading ourselves in a wide variety of relationships.

Let’s begin this quest into understanding and developing leadership by going back to September, 2022. In that week’s Wellness Wednesday, we referred to Kevin Cashman’s book Leadership from the Inside Out, in which he defined leadership as “authentic self-expression that creates value“ for others. We’re going to use this as the basic definition of leadership.

Top 20 leaders (effective leaders) add something of value to the lives of other people. We can think of them as germinators. They think and communicate in ways that foster the growth and improvement of others. They plant those small seeds of positive energy, nurture them, and celebrate their development into deep-rooted, successful outcomes.

Bottom 80 leaders (ineffective leaders) are terminators. They limit or suffocate the development of others. Whereas germinators help the group to flourish, terminators block potential and prevent what is possible in a group.

  1. Who are leaders you have experienced who were germinators? Why do you think so?
  2. Who are leaders you have experienced who were terminators? Why do you think so?

The purpose of Wellness Wednesdays over the next few months will be to help us become more aware of the mindset and skills for being germinators who create value for others.

From our Top 20 team…Willow, Kevin, and Tom…germinators all.
