I have missed our weekly Wellness Wednesday connection. I have learned that I have contracted pancreatic cancer and will begin chemo treatments next week. Fortunately, I am not experiencing any pain or suffering at this time. I actually feel really good.

I don’t mean to minimize what cancer patients go through, but I would like to share with you how I became aware of this condition. My symptoms began in quite a humorous sort of way.

I attended a Conference for 700 educators from throughout the country. After conducting sessions during the conference, I was at the Ft. Lauderdale airport heading back to Minnesota. As I made my way through security, I carried my computer bag on my right should and my clothes bag on my left shoulder. Being asked to take off my belt, I held my belt in my left hand. It was then that it happened. My pants fell down to my knees. That’s not a misprint. My pants fell down to my knees. Yes, go ahead. It’s time to laugh.

I had lost several pounds in the previous week or two. Once home, I made an appointment to see my doctor. After a number of tests, it became known that the significant weight loss was the result of pancreatic cancer.

There have been times over the last few weeks when I have cried. Each time resulted from the incredible gratitude I have experienced from the outpouring of love, thoughtfulness and prayers from family, friends, and Top 20 connections.

As you celebrate Valentine’s Day, realize that love is the best medicine for whatever ails us.

Next week we’ll get back to our normal Wellness Wednesday messages. Until then, love the person next to you.

Happy Valentine’s Day from our Top 20 team: Willow, Tom and Kevin.
