A few summers ago, I was with my five-year-old granddaughter Emma at a Little League baseball game. As I watched the game, Emma wandered around the play area. Soon I saw her running towards me. “Grampa, look what I found,” she said as she opened her hand to show me a glass heart.
Then she added, “Grampa, will you keep my heart for me?” I have carried Emma’s glass heart in my pocket for the past 2 ½ years. Every time she sees me, Emma asks, “Grampa, do you have my heart?” I always do.
This simple story of Emma’s heart represents the spirit of the Christmas season. The glass heart is the essence of my granddaughter. Like Emma, each of us is searching for that place where we belong, where someone will hold us and wholeheartedly care for us. We desire an immeasurable, profound connection that satisfies the deepest longing of the human heart.
As we come to the end of 2021, countless young people and adults throughout the world are searching for someone who will keep their heart so they can experience belonging with and to another…a precious connection of hearts.
