Two years ago, Rock Valley, Iowa, made the commitment to bring Top 20 to their community. Business leaders and school administrators joined together to make Social-Emotional Learning an important part of daily life in their town of 3500 people. Top 20 Training has now trained hundreds of adults in the community, the entire school staff, and the students. The town has posted lawn signs with Top 20 phrases like “Keep Your Day” and “Confusion Rocks” and Top 20 banners are also being hung on Main Street lampposts.
They have also instituted a ritual at the high school basketball games this winter. During pre-game introductions, they are intentionally recognizing one of their elementary school classes publicly. The students are called to center court and are celebrated for their behaviors, their positive attitudes, and their willingness to Help Others Succeed. None of the recognition is centered on their academic or athletic performance (as “human doers”); they are being singled out for who they are (as “human beings”). It is just one of many effective ideas that the school is implementing to support their commitment to becoming a Top 20 community.
We are always looking for great ideas like this one from schools, businesses, and communities that are implementing our Top 20 strategies. Email or call us if you have any initiatives worth sharing with other people!
