It might not seem like a very big deal, but it is. Students are in a very vulnerable position when teachers return tests, quizzes or projects to them. The evaluation and comparison that young people experience in school every day is a high-stakes proposition.

Teachers need to be aware that students sometimes take test scores very personally. Even though it can be very frustrating for teachers when students have poor tests, it is very important for them to maintain their composure. When teachers return tests with negative non-verbal communication, it can be devastating for young people.

Take a look at the video in this blog. Former teacher Tom relates how he used to struggle to keep a watchful eye on how he was reacting to students’ test scores…and what he did to change the process to produce more positive results.
