Tom Cody taught high school and middle school for forty years. “Not sure there is a tougher stretch during the school year than those three weeks before winter break in December,” he recalls. “Students are focused, but generally not on anything remotely connected to academics.”

Many schools operate on three trimesters, making these next few weeks the beginning of the second term. Students tend to think of this period as a “break” from school. Teachers need to emphasize the importance of this valuable month of school, despite the challenges that come with it.

Think about it: these three weeks constitute one-twelfth of the normal school year. Learning has to continue this month, but holiday celebrations could certainly be included in the planning. Teaching content doesn’t mean that classrooms cannot be energized, spirited and fun!
